As some of you may know, my grandmother, Phyllis Rooney, passed away early Friday morning. But instead of focusing on being sad, I think the perfect way to remember her is with a post about how stellar she was as a notorious fashionista and supporter of the arts, especially in the Toledo area.

Reflecting on growing up during the Great Depression, Nana told me stories about her childhood dress maker, and about the beautiful fur coats that she treasured from a very young age. She once asked me if I smoked, and when I (stunned) exclaimed that I did NOT, she was surprised... "Of course" she had smoked in school... it was very chic. This is the same woman who completely ruined her feet because she insisted on wearing heels every day, especially on the high school stairwells.

To Easter dinner a few years ago, she donned a blood red poncho (assuming it would pass as a dress), a pair of black opaque tights, black pumps, and a silver metallic trench. My mother almost had a heart attack, but I was thoroughly impressed. This woman realized the leggings as acceptable bottoms trend BEFORE every sorority girl in America...

Nana taught me the importance of dressing the part from birth. I can definitely say that she inspired me to become the woman I am today- sophisticated yet fierce, classy yet cutting edge. She balanced it all seamlessly, and most people remember her amazing passion for fashion and art. The last few years were especially painful for her, and I am completely certain that she has finally found the peace and respect she deserves. Though it seems weird that her Vogue subscription will end after 71 years (she began subscribing at age 16), I have no doubt that she will continue to inspire through her legacy... and through the amazing pieces that she leaves behind.

"Meg, she is in a better place. She is finally happy".
"Care, I envision heaven to be full of Chanel and Prada... I am certain she is happy".
